I'm still not sure taking a smallish childrens' toy, creating a reasonable edible facsimile, and encouraging them to chow down on said doppleganger is great parenting, but the LEGO nut in me would love to try making these!

Mike Lynch and The Hippo

No, it's not my upcoming children's book, it's a really really good interview with cartoony pal, Mike Lynch, in The Hippo!

Here's the bit that I'm still pondering the most:

“There’s probably less than a thousand people in this country who are making their living by cartooning,” Lynch said.

“Everyone gets along and everyone tends to be interested in what the other person is doing,” he said. Lynch said he knows most of his competitors, and some of his best friends are the artists whose work is seen regularly in the New Yorker or Wall Street Journal.

I'd love to know some sort of census figure, but that sounds about right.

And he's right, for the most part, even being competitors in a very small niche, pretty much everyone is happy for the other guy when they sell.

Andertoons' Fifth Anniversary

I like Halloween, but I love October 31st.

It was exactly five years ago, on a Friday like this, that I worked my final day at my last day job. Five years of cartooning more or less full time, and being a stay-at-home dad full time and then some. Five years of diapers, ink, coffee, and immeasurable fun.

I remember agonizing over whether or not to give my boss two weeks notice. It was the kind of place where they very possibly would ask you to gather up your things and leave then and there. My friend in HR assured me that I was well-liked, and she was sure they'd keep me on. She was right and I worked on "special projects" for the next 10 business days.

Just in case, I had dreamed up a scenario where my costume would be me, looking disheveled, dressed in rumpled sweats, with a diaper stuck to my shoulder. When asked "what are you supposed to be?" I would answer "A stay-at-home dad. Can we talk in your office?" I'm glad it didn't go that way, both for my peace of mind, and our pocketbook.

It hasn't always been easy. Keeping a close eye on the kids, the budget, and the calendar occasionally leads to some very early mornings (I'm writing this at 5 AM about a week and half early to fit it in) but I wouldn't trade it for anything!

My Grandpa, Ivyl Swanson

That's my grandpa, Ivyl Swanson, on the left. This was taken sometime in the 1940's, and to my uncle's best recollection, it's from some sort of safety promo.

Not a lot else to say here, except that that's the way a cop should look, and I miss him terribly.

Halloween Cartoons Sampler Platter

Halloween is almost here, so I thought I'd post some of my favorite Halloween cartoons to scare up a few laughs.

This skeleton cartoon took a while and was a little outside my art comfort zone. It was worth it.

This pumpkin cartoon is probably my biggest Halloween seller.

And finally, this chicken cartoon has never sold, but for some reason I still think it's funny. (BTW, "bawk baaaaawk..." is poultry for 'they're heeeeere...")

Halloween Costumes

OK, I'm not dressing up for Halloween, but a quick look at some costume sites and I'm impressed with some of the cartoon related costumes:

Hulk costumes are pretty standard, but an inflatable one? Nice!

I was all set to mock a female Robin, but apparently there was one. Go figure.

LOVE the arms on this Popeye! A-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah-gah!

And finally, at $799.99, this Superman outfit is expensive, but WOW!
